Wait There For Me
My best friend closed his eyes tonight,
As he laid his tiny head in my hand,
The doctors said he was in pain,
And it was hard for him to even stand.
The thoughts that moved inside my head,
As I held him in my arms.
Were all of his younger puppy years,
And his many charms.
I remember how he'd run to me
to play fetch, his favorite game,
And how his floppy ears would perk right up
When he heard me yell his name.
You sensed when I was happy,
Or was feeling a little down;
You’d come up right against my knee,
And you never made me frown.
I never once felt afraid or lonely,
As long as you were here;
You always laid under my blanket,
And you constantly were near.
I hear of a place that is made of gold,
a place where we will never grow old,
But one answer I have not heard at all,
will there be paw prints from my little dog?
He promised us joy right from the start,
I just wonder if he'll be a part.
So, see you later, my best friend,
I’m glad you are now pain-free;
And I’m glad you’re playing in heaven with your puppy friends,
Now… please wait there for me.
