At The Corner Store
Rushing home late from the train station
A man in a hoody, that the police report later described as
“Haitian”
The man in his business suit on his way home
Belt buckle and cuff links sparkling chrome
Stopping at the corner store for a light
Looking around frantically as something wasn’t right
The cold metal barrel pressed hard on his neck
He didn’t have to turn around to check
Instead he looked down, the newspaper in his hand read
“Unknown Mugger Strikes Again”
Three shots rang out his last words
“Amen”
Body limp on the concrete, blood pooling around
When the man in the hoody was arrested all he could say was
“Is it cause I’m brown”
The memorial service is Sunday
The family distraught, gathered to pray
The lottery numbers tonight read
“Eighteen, Nine, Twenty Seven and Three.”
Another winner shouting in glee

I wrote "At The Corner Store" based on the poem "Salvadoran Woman Killed on Fillmore Street" by Daisy Zamora mainly playing off the idea of communicating information through news. When writing this poem I tried to emphasize the duality of two very different events involving tragedy and success. Additionally, I was using a relatively simple rhyme scheme to contrast my goal of conveying the deeper meaning of conflict of social class. Lastly, the general vagueness of the poem was implemented to show how this situation isn't a one time occurrence but something that happens frequently to a large diaspora of people.
