El Diez
El Diez
There once was a poor boy named Diego who lived with his seven other siblings and their loving parents, and despite being poor, he had one dream. To play soccer. In 1976 young Diego Maradona started his twenty-two year long professional soccer career at age 15 for Argentine Juniors which at the time broke Argentina record. He would sadly miss out of the 1978 World Cup because the Argentinian national team thought he was too young. After a couple years at Argentine Juniors he moved to Boca Juniors and won his first championship. He then went to the FC Barcelona where he won another championship. After his glory at Barcelona he moved once again, this time to Napoli in 1982 which at the time were in 12th place. He then lead them to their first ever championship since being founded in 1926! (Weebly). He then played his first World Cup and lead Argentina to their second World Cup victory where he got the golden ball which is one of biggest awards in soccer history that only a legend like him deserved (wikipedia).
People would argue that Pele who was also recognized as the best in the world was much better than Maradona, and that Maradona was no where near the talent of Pele, but Pele played during the 50’s and 60’s.Maradona came along in the 1970’s (Background), so the game was way more advanced since Pele was playing, and Pele never played in Europe which was where all the biggest teams in the world played, but Maradona spent most of his time playing there (World of Soccer). He made a huge impact on the history of soccer by scoring his infamous “Hand of God” goal in the 1978 World Cup in Mexico (Youtube). And also by getting Argentine their second World Cup and still to this day their latest World Cup win. He loved his country so much that in 2008 he became the manager for the Argentinian national team.
His name was Diego Armando Maradona
A footballing genius was once born in South America,
the type a country longs for, for this we thank a country called Argentina,
he would for years grace the blue and white shirt of number ten,
What was this single footballing empire's name again ?
Short, built, strong, masculine and left footed,
bulletproof knees and eyes always goalward routed.
Played for Boca, Barcelona, Napoli and Seville,
out of those it was at Napoli we saw him at his most real.
Desire was always to win, that’s why he committed the handball sin,
said it was god, anything to piss the damn English off,
Authorities always after him, didn’t like him to play,
In Mexico '86 everyone was made to pay,
no-one could stop his quest for the title,
the World Cup was his in the envy of his rivals,
The number 10 shirt that’s what i remember most immense,
the way it used to turn and twist and tear apart any defence,
years full of exquisite goals and free kicks,
god! all that many teams took so many licks,
he would for years grace the blue and white shirt of number ten,
What was this single footballing empire's name again ?
Maradona was his surname,
I remember, I remember, that was his name,
Diego Maradona forever the best in the game.
From a poor boy’s dream to a soccer legend's career Diego Armando Maradona’s twenty-two legacy will never be forgotten.
