How It Really Feels
Who do you think you are to wear clothing items made for me and my people?
You think because it’s a “joke” that you can wear clothes that have no significance to you?
People wear those headscarves because it’s part of their religion, you wear them because you think it’s funny.
People wear those bindis because it can be used to ward off bad luck in Hindu religion or represent a married woman, you wear them because you think it’s a cute accessory item.
These clothing items aren’t just cute and chic
These clothing items aren’t just for you to wear on the jokiest day or any day of the year
Do you really understand why these items are worn?
Do you really understand the cultural and societal importance to these items?
You’re not a part of my culture,
You don’t understand why we find it offensive when you think you can go around and wear attire made for our culture specifically,
We’re not going the extra mile and we’re not being over-sensitive.
