Contradictions
Life contradicts itself
And so it needs a balance:
Of ‘fake it till you make it’
Yet not betraying yourself;
Of knowing that luck is pretty lucky
But hard work is what really works;
Of living carefreely
Yet also carefully.
And though adults hold more knowledge
Children must teach them more.
Teach them wonder, and questioning,
And that learning shouldn’t be a bore.
I know now that there are things
That we don’t know what it brings
Or why it does what it does
Or where it ever even came from.
But we should still keep trying to understand
No matter how small, no matter how grand,
No matter on sea, in air, in space, or on land.
Even if we will never really understand.
Holding on has contradictions, too.
Because,
though you should never give up,
Some things just have to fall through.
And when they fall through,
It may be easier to
Just stop trying and let go.
To let them fall through.
Especially if they don’t try
To be held on to.
And everything always changes
So don’t try to stop it.
It’s like trying to stop a storm.
You can’t; Just go with it.
Because life is like the weather
And a person is a rock.
Eventually, over time,
The rock will be shocked and knocked
And it’ll change shape, or get worn away
But the rock is still there
In some kind of way.

I was inspired to write this piece after watching Sarah Kay's "If I Should Have A Daughter" spoken word poem in class. She talked about how she got people to try out writing and poetry by telling them to write down simple things they knew to be true. Our teacher told us to write down ten things we each knew to be true, and those ten items that I came up with all had one central theme: contradictions. So I took some of those ten things and made this poem.
