  The freshly fallen leaves went

crunch
     crunch
underneath our rain boots
The damp air blanketed us like an icy cloud and stung our eyes with tears
An earthy scent, along with the faint sweetness of outdoors
made us imagine that the backyard woods were a fairy kingdom.
It was magical, in a way
The colors of trees were the remnants of used spells
waste from the everyday enchantments of glowing sprites
the raindrops were dragon tears, big and fat
falling on our foreheads with a discernable sound that echoed like a chinese gong
and the giant piles of leaves were made just for us by the friendly monsters of the forest
who peeked between the trees to watch us play
We laughed in joy at these wonders, and our breath froze in the air
like a dense fog around our faces
Those days were short and fleeting, and before long
the leaves quickly became limp and the damp air grew colder
in preparation for the desolate winter
that was soon to come
But the sorcery of the autumn woods would forever last in our hearts
and we would remember fall as the domain of mystery.
