Flapping, whipping, thrashing
In the wind
In the town’s single playground
You stay pinned
I wish I was as brave, as powerful and strong
Woven together like a braid or a perfect melody song
Thin enough to glide through air
And cast away a spontaneous adventure
You fight your enemy known as the wind
And bash away flying leaves
Like they are nasty, betraying friends
The touch of stone cold metal pressed against my face
The power of your greatness in all it’s grace
The cold smooth surface rests against my tongue
Sweeping away the heat as soon as it comes
White Winter blankets sprinkle down over you
Out comes my tongue
Now we’re stuck like glue
The seasons come and go
you got through it all
I think about you at every nightfall
I dreamed of being as free as you
But as a knowledgeable girl
I knew it couldn't be true
As I was so little
So small
So simple
But with the help of you
I could reach my dreams as big as the moon
You would be my rocket
And
My cozy cocoon
With you nothing could hurt me
To pain, I was immune
Stand tall and fierce above us
Watch over me as I grow
Remind me of the person I was
And
Reflect on the one I’ve come to know
Your lessons will stay with me as I venture on
Until
we meet again American flag,
Stand tall,
Stand strong

The author's comments:

I am a thirteen year old student in 7th grade at Casey Middle school. I enjoy writing of all generas but poetry has always been my favorite. My Language Arts teacher, Ms. Menough, has inspired me to submit some of my work pieces to websites such as this one and get my writing out into the world. I want people to read my writing and really enjoy it. I hope adults will see adolesents as equals and I think that if I make it into this contest, adults will believe in me and my writing more as well as other adolesents.
