Back in Elementary School, We Sang Happier Songs

back in elementary school, we’d throw sheets over our heads and pretend we were ghosts/back before we knew that there was more to fear in the world than sharks/back before we knew how to say it might be cancer/back before we knew that the older we got, the more infected our hearts became with snakes/back before we clawed at the prison cells of our minds screaming let us out/back before the little girls started to shave the hair from their legs/back before we had to ask what do you mean by okay/
