I feel the heat beating down on mean like I’m holding up the world in the humid air
Sweat slowing collecting on my skin so it’s glistening
The massive walls of the Grand Canyon leering down on me
In the vast expanse, I feel so claustrophobic, the walls closing in on every side
The sun pressing on my body even though it’s covered by clouds
Searching for an escape from the heat but even the shade does me no good
The sound of rushing water fills my ears, it’s peaceful
But I know if I step one foot in, I’ll be swept away
Disappearing into the swirling mess of white water without a second glance
My throat burns from breathing in the dust from the dry ground
Dead shrubs scraping my legs as I walk like animals yearning for attention
I can taste the moisture in the air, along with gravel that’s been blown up in the wind

I took inspiration from one of my family vacations to the Grand Canyon for this poem.
