Heroin: A Tragic Love Story
“Hey Jude” plays
Your even breathing
A metronome above me
In the peaceful quiet
My consciousness slipping
Into a dream.
The nightmare begins
Mom believing she’s alone
Her face a tv screen
Displaying her sorrow in high def
The screams jarring me awake
Break me from the illusion.
Lily’s face down
Not moving
Barely breathing
Her skin cerulean
An array of tendrils protruding
From her porcelain wrist.
The nightmare resets
With the phone bleating
A knell tolls
My eyes snap open
I can’t hear the breathing.
The nightmare bleeds
Into a daydream
With a toilet’s flush
The gritty white grains
Create a vortex
Sucking me down with it.

I wrote this piece as a way to cope with my family's hardships. My sister has struggled for years with addiction, and I found poetry to be a positive outlet. I hope those who have dealt with similar issues can find some comfort from reading this and knowing they are not alone. Eventually, scars fade and the struggles you or your family are experiencing will pass.
