She's 6 years old.

Her aunt is pregnant with a healthy baby girl.

A few months into her aunt's  pregnancy, the girl's mother tells her that her aunt is sick with this six-letter word called "cancer".
The young girl doesn't understand what this means, but can tell from her mother's tone that it is bad.

Later that night, she hears her mother speaking secretively to her father.
"She could lose the baby." Her mother whispers.
"She could go herself." Her father adds in a similar tone.

The girl understands nothing about this sickness; yet she knows she loathes it.

Miraculously, her aunt and new baby cousin survive.

Fourteen years later, our girl hears the six-letter word again.

This time, it's her mother.

"It's thyroid cancer. We believe it's from all the years you were an X-ray technician. The radiation has most likely built up in your body, and in turn, created the cells in your thyroid."

The girl is older and understands the seriousness, yet dosen't understand why it chose to attack her family.

What did her aunt and no-longer-baby cousin do to deserve it?

What did her mom, who gave her life to her children, do to deserve this gut wrenching sickness?

As the years go on, her mother gets worse.

"It's spread to her lungs." They've said.
"Now it's in her bones." They've said.
"Now it's in her blood." They've said.

She wonders every day, will her mother's fate turn out like her Aunts?

Or will the girl lose another one to the six-letter-word she still can't fully comprehend; cancer.
