A Poem
With death still on their minds,
he left in a nick of time,
leaving his small child with no parents.
An orphan, he made her.
Did he ever care?,
she would wonder, as tears threatened to spill from her bright eyes.
She would look to the skies,
wishing for a sign that he was coming back;
That he still cared.
A father they now shared.
With a half sister,
there was no blood connecting them.
Just the bond of the same man;
One real, and one forged.
She envied her half sister,
wishing he would have stayed to raise her.
Instead, he left to father her.
She never blamed the child, though.
No matter how much she tried.
She knew her father did this on his own.
She knew he was at fault.
She’ll never know who her real father is.
Perhaps he ran away;
perhaps he was dead.
Perhaps he didn’t know of her existence;
for, he and her mother were never wed.
She named herself a mistake child.
Never meant to be.
Even though her middle name, Marie, meant the opposite.
She hoped and prayed she was wrong,
that her mother wanted her all along.
That her father didn’t leave because of her existence.
