The Soul's Cry
Life holds
so much beauty
Or so I’m told:
The miracle of
a baby’s birth
The beauty of
a sunrise
We feel the longing of love
We share our toys
and our joys
Sorrow may knock
at our heart’s door
But the comfort of
a mother or brother
Answers.
So much to live for!
But…
so many unanswered questions
Such as:
Why do children die?
Why the unanswered cry
Of poverty?
Why is there old age?
Why is our time on life’s stage
So short?
Science answers
the best it can
But there are deeper issues
in the soul of a man
So religions step in
Some talk of sin
Of hell and rage
And rituals and rules.
Others speak
Of peace and love
And freedom and joy.
Are all wrong?
Are any right?
Perhaps each seeks
in its own way
To fill the hole in the human heart
That deepest, inmost
secret space
That desperately asks,
“Do I have a place?
Am I important in this life?
Is there a reason for the strife?
The sorrow? The joy?
The youth? The aging?
The love? The loneliness?”
The answers must lie,
then,
Not in the outer display,
But in the hope
That springs within
When God’s love
Frees us from our sin
And gives us purpose
To strive
The greater good
In all we have.
