I am from pictures
from Canon and Nikon.
I am from the home filled with memories.
(Inspiring, amusing,
it felt like the past.)
I am from the cherry blossom tree
whose flowers rely on their companions’ roots
because they have none of their own.

I am from avoidance and drama,
from Sharon and James Robert.
I am from the headstrong
and the stubborn.
From Calm down! and Don't be shy!
I am from churchless Sundays,
sleeping in instead of going out.

I am from the Irish who moved to Texas,
potatoes and Hamburger Helper.
From the war my grandfather risked
his life for,
the drugs my aunt shared with her small
children.

I am from the photo albums
in my mom’s closet,
filled so full they don't even close.
I am from those little moments
forgotten the next day,
then remembered again
once the roll of film was developed.
