On Turning Thirteen
A thirteen-year-old girl fears dogs.
My neighbor had a dog.
He barked towards me everyday,
when I passed by.
I shivered with fright,
Fearing the bite from him.
Then I began to make a detour,
When I saw him.
His owner, Mrs. Smith told me,
“He has never bitten people. He’s just barking to protect me.”
One day, after school,
an ambulance came and left,
taking Ms. Smith away.
The dog chased it more than five blocks.
Ms. Smith passed away,
and he wanted to accompany her.
Thus, he gave up the hope of life.
He stopped eating and moving.
Every times when I passed by,
I gave him a chicken nugget,
but he ignored both me and the nugget.
I offered out of sympathy.
He declined out of despair.
Until one day,
he followed me and stared.
His eyes were full of hope,
like the light on the road to a future.
My love and care rekindled his hope of life.
A thirteen-year-old girl loves them.
