Do you hear the people's voices?

The people: all alone in the world, relying on you to protect them.

Protect their freedom,

Their rights,

Their lives.

Can you hear them? Can you try really hard?

The money is loud. It shouts, it screams, it surrenders

Itself to dreams of the greatest country in the world.

It is all that you hear when you receive a donation--

Forget about the other 99% of the nation.

The 1%, made up of corporations and organizations,

Giving you those green slips of paper--

Do you hear them?

Of course!

Because you benefit them with laws and legislation

Simply because they gave you a "small" campaign donation.

You let them write it, and then you sign it

Discreetly in the night,

Ignoring our plight.

Because if the law does not go their way, they lose those

Green slips of paper.

And you would have failed

In doing them their favor.

Sincerly,

99%

I wanted to write a poem about the corruption in the political system because I think it is the most important issue facing America today, but it is also the most overlooked issue. Corruption is legal in America, and it's about time that more people heard about that so we can make it illegal.
