Recess

I am trapped in a bubble.
Its arms wrap around me, shielding me from life.
No mulch to get in my shoes, no swings to let me fly, no monkey bars to swing from, no recess time at all.
Security is not what I want. I crave freedom.
My inner monsters try to lock the door.
But I won’t let them.
They hunger for something new, but are afraid to hunt.
Feed your monsters, give them what they want.
Sprint through the rainforest, scale a mountain, dance on the sunset, and soar over the ocean.
Set fire to your fears.
Watch sparks fly as you saw through the iron lock that’s keeping your monsters inside you.
This bubble begs for me to stay, sheltered and afraid.
Of what- I have yet to find out.
Let me out of this trap.
The world is my playground and I do not need supervision.
Do not tell me to be careful; let me fall and scrape my knee.
Do not put a bandage on my wound; let me heal myself.
Do not hold my hand across the street; let me see the road.
I do not need protection any longer.
Look around; there’s more to the world than what meets the eye.
I want to sing with the trees, watch the stars dance, swim to the bottom of the ocean, and be kissed by the sun.
I don’t want to be sheltered.
I want to live.
I want to breathe with liberation.
I want to get out of this enclosure and be engulfed in another world.
I want to see what’s out there. I’m tired of inhabiting a sheltered existence.
I want to make a change. I will make a change.
No more protection.
So go ahead, pop your bubble.
It’s recess time.

The author's comments:

This poem was inspired by the line "no recess" from the song 'School' by Nirvana. I want people to see that they should not be afraid to live their life. Getting out there and seeing what there is to see (good and bad) is what makes lives. I want to encourage people to go do things while they can and to take risks because as the saying goes, "you only live once".
