Love as You Grow
What is love?
When you're a baby,
love is the small grip you have on your parents one finger,
it’s keeping your parents awake,
all throughout the night.
It’s the crying and screaming you do,
Just to let them know you’re hungry.
It’s the mess they don't really want to clean up
but do anyways,
because they love you.
Now you’re a little elementary schooler,
when love turns into riding around on your dad's foot,
while squeezing his leg so tight
so you wouldn't fall off into what you pretended was lava.
Love is when you throw a fit in a store,
because your parents wouldn't buy you what you wanted.
It’s when you get picked on by the boys at school
and run away from them because they have “cooties”.
It’s when you chant that little rhyme in a boys face,
“Girls go to college to get more knowledge,
Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider”
the boy that you deep down think is cute.
Then there's something called, “Love”.
Middle school “Love”.
“Love” is when you get your first boyfriend,
the one you’ll go out of the way for just to meet at his locker.
“Love” is when you hold hands walking down the hall,
as you “drop each other off” at class,
but outside of school you don’t even know each other.
Now I know what love is,
Love is a forever changing concept
From heartbreaks to losses,
to seeking new acquaintances.
As you continue to grow older,
Love will continue to change.
