Ode to a backpack
Heavy with the stress of a thousand assignments,
straps frayed at the edges, dusty
blacks faded to greys
the trusty backpack
During the school year
it served its owner well
carrying all essentials
holding the binders and textbooks
But when school ended, it was liberated
free of the crushing weight
still used, but for other purposes
It carried the summer spirit
towel, bathing suit, sketching supplies
the mid year essentials
But when summer came to a close
it faithfully returned to its more serious duties,
the symbols of warm weather removed
cleaned of the crumbs of summer
the cycle continues
