There it lies, reposing in its rightful place:

a glimmering bronzed key,
the security to all the locks in our lives.
In some ways, we are that key.
Einstein had the key, unlocking the world of physics
with the formula, E = mc 2
Picasso had the key, introducing his unique style of art
with “The Weeping Woman”.
Even David Bowie had the key, creating new music
with his innovative style of electronic rock.

We are the security to all of our secrets.
The hidden fears that become a hellish nightmare.
The loneliness that becomes a prison for our soul,
The rejection that becomes our failed acceptance.
Holding those moments scare us, embarrass us, even control us.
We become a sealed door,
nothing can ever open us.

Until we meet that one person.
If we are lucky, they will open up the universe.

At first those moments that scared us, embarrassed us, controlled us,
are slowly revealed.
Then we become part of their lock,
and they become part of our key,
until we are the lock and the key.

The author's comments:

While reading Ted Kooser's book, Valentines, I began to be inspired by the ideas of love. Throughout many of his poems, Kooser illustrates the complexities of love. Because of this, I decided to write about the significance of love between to people, and try to impress the idea that there is, inevitably, someone in the world that will complete you.
