THE RISK OF TEXTING AND DRIVING

I’m on the highway
On that dark summer night
My car crashes
my head hits the windshield with the force of a wrecking ball
I hit an oak tree
The stinging smell of gasoline and moldy bark
ambulance sirens yelp
everything is a blur
the breathing machine beeps
as my pulse leaps
I’m fighting for my life as we speak
all I smell now is the rubber gloves of the man trying to help
my pulse is slowing
my parents sorrow is growing
the doctor gives my parents the it’s unlikely-for-her-to-live-look
They found a phone outside the car
Was that text really worth a life?
DON’T
TEXT
AND
DRIVE
