“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”

― Marilyn Monroe

To be contained in a dark room.
No windows.
No people.
No way out.
One heart beats lonesome.
It throbs.
It pulses.
Tears fall hot.
They stain a beautiful face.
Pale and lonely.
Like the moon.
Her features are round, and soft.
Her thoughts drift.
Her heart beats.
Big eyes morn.
They morn alone.
Its just her, the darkness, and her two blue eyes.
She’s beautiful but thin.
Malnourished.
Starving for human interaction.
For human touch.
For human love.
But she can’t.
She can’t leave the dark room.
Its locked.
Tight.
And the rabid intimidating world awaits her outside,
Frothing at the mouth.
Chomping at the bit.
Daring her to come outside.
Waiting.
She’s scared.
But she doesn’t want to be.
She wants to be the strong one.
The brave one.
Tears continue to draw lines down her cheeks.
The dark grows darker.
Even though that’s impossible.
Right?
Suddenly a thought.
Small and quick.
Merely a flash through her conscience.
“Its okay to be scared.”
“Its okay to cry sometimes.”
“Its okay to not know what to do.”
The tears stop drawing their regular lines.
And her heart seems to stop beating.
But only for a moment.
She laughs.
She’s up.
She runs, and jumps.
She falls…
But she gets back up.
She bangs her fists on the locked door.
A screams into the darkness.
Yells into the darkness.
She hates the darkness.
But the darkness doesn’t hate her.
It fades.
Slowly.
And the door to the world opens with a creak.
She sees it.
She sees the life.
The love.
The people.
She sees crime too, and pain.
She knows she can handle it.
She breathes in.
Once.
Twice.
Absorbs the life.
And she goes.
Puts her foot over the threshold.
She’s ready.
She’s ready to face the world.
Ready to see the world.
Through hard times, and good.
She goes.
She flourishes.
She grows.
She lives.
Girl meets world.
