Hell Gained A Devil
A smile, from her, they say was a myth
They knew her as shrew, but her name was J. Smith
She would walk into class and the room would freeze
The rumor was she left her soul overseas
She was feared in the halls, and avoided by teachers
She would skip math class to smoke, under the bleachers
She had bruises and cuts all over her body
"Those are from the fights she starts" whispered little Bobby
It was fourth period English, when we got the call
J. Smith crashed her car on the way to the mall
"Hell gained a devil" all ran through our thoughts
Our heads were heavy and our bellies in knots
We emptied her locker, and cleaned out her desk
In the back, behind books, her diary rest
"My mother won't stop drinking" were the first words I read
"My father is abusive" the little diary said
"He beats me and scolds me at the end of every day"
"During sixth period math, I go under the bleachers to pray"
"We were all wrong" I sat there and thought
Heaven gained an angel, and a devil she was not
