My heart beats faster as I walk up to it,
attracting bystanders and cameras like moths to a light spewing black smoke and steam.
I behold the sight of an enormous machine.
Its massive iron wheels stand taller than I do.
The constant pounding of the air pump
and the hissing and humming makes it seem like it’s breathing
like it is alive!
The sweet and pungent smells of coal smoke, hot oil, and grease
just takes me back like a time machine.
The sheer size of this alive machine makes me wonder how does one tame and operate this giant antique?
I hear the shoveling of coal as the fireman feeds the engine
My eyes gaze in amazement at the integrate, complicated iron rods
I am jumpscared by the loud, ear deafening whistle that puts a chill down my spine,
and reaches down into my soul.
I take a few steps back as the beast begins moving.
A luminous gold beam of light shoots down the tracks from the headlight
Steam shoots out the side and smoke belches out the stack in a spectacular show.
I observe all of the valve gear motion working in perfect harmony.
I can just feel the power of the engine as it pulls out the station
My feet tremble as the ground vibrates.
the train gains more speed, and all I can do is wave,
and before i know it,
I am staring at the last car of the train,
as it drifts into the orange lit sunset.
All I hear is a fading lonesome whistle.

Dear Editor of Teen Ink,

Please consider the attached poem- “The Iron Horse- for possible inclusion in a future issue of Teen Ink. I have always liked the music of poetry and the ideas of the writer flowing out like a waterfall to create a fascinating story. I feel that this poem is a “be there” experience and history in the making.

I am a freshman in highschool from the city of Richmond, Va. I have enjoyed writing everything from short stories to poems of my life and interest for years. I would be honored to have my writing included in Teen Ink.

Thank you for consideration,

Mr. Andrew D.
