The Tugging Scarf
You knitted me a scarf with secrets and memories.
You draped it around my neck, tugged me around
By that beautiful scarf
Into an unseasoned mine called love.
I wore your scarf for months, the scarf you towed me by.
I was always three steps behind you.
We were linked by the yarn you had woven,
Getting tighter with each gentle pull.
You didn't notice when the beaten old scarf got longer
From the endless yanking,
Your pulling habit became less gentle
And the yarn started to fray.
Three steps turned into five, then eight.
The farther I got, the harder you pulled.
Until
One day
The scarf ripped, and
I broke free.
