"If you shine, don't shine half-heartedly, shine so bright that you eclipse the sun, moon and stars, shine in a way that YOU become the sun"

Hold on to your memory of me
The fearlessness I oozed
Reflected in my solid smile
The way I'd look at the stars
As if through them I saw the future
In all its glorious splendour

Hold on to your memory of us
The holes between my fingers
Filled perfectly by your tender hand
The walks on golden sand
With the melody of crashing waves
And a sunset on our shoulders
Talking about our plans as we get older
The rush of adrenaline making us bolder
The soft contact
The first contact
The way things just got better

Until the storm hit
Ruining your memory of me
Ruining your memory of us
Now, fear is a permanent feature in my eyes
I can no longer smile, even as a disguise
The stars aren't the same anymore
Because I now see a future gone
A destiny swept from under my feet

My fingers have thinned out
The spaces too big, even for you
Your tenderness evolved into cautiousness
Walking is a chore
Music doesn't stir my soul no more
Plans made are now in ruins
Less contact
No contact
Things got worse

One day you'll see
The woman your heart lurched for
The beautiful imperfection of the before
The relationship that defined amour
The peace we were looking for
But honey, you will only see
If you hold on to the real me

The author's comments:

This poem aims to explore the toll that disease, illness and harship has on a relationship, something I experienced first-hand. Through the perspective of the woman, this poem hopes to encourage its readers to do what the woman urges her sweetheart to do. Endure and perservere.
