We live in a world
Where the pizza man can
Arrive to your house before
An emergency response team.

We live in a world
Where relationships
Are made through texts,
Kept through sex, and
Expressed by certain hashtags
On certain days of the week.

We live in a world
Where our phone’s death
Is nearly as tragic
As our pet’s.
Where a shattered iPhone
Screen is equivalent to
The apocalypse.

We live in a world
Teeming with double standards;
The more likes your selfie gets,
The more popular you are.
But you’re called an attention wh**e
For posting a picture of yourself
So everyone can see.

We live in a world
Where men drool over
Half-naked girls on the internet,
But as soon as the girl who
Sits next to his son in a senior
Literature class bares a hint of
Her shoulder during the 105 degree heat wave,
She needs to cover up.

We live in a world
Where bullying is the norm,
And people with mental illnesses
Are told “just get over it.”

We live in a world
Where society points out
All of our flaws and imperfections.
But don’t worry, three easy payments
Of $19.95 can fix you right up.

A world that once a person
Feels so worthless,
They take themselves out of it,
Society tells them how beautiful
They really were and oh why
Couldn’t they see it and
They were loved, so loved.

We live in a world
Where sports stories take
The place of stories about
Illnesses, murders, terrorism;
Trying to put on
The facade of a perfect country.

A country that is neck deep
In greed, envy, and debt.
That is full of paradoxes
And death and deceit.

While we preach about
The Seven Deadly Sins,
We are obese, and
Lustful, and murderous,
And envious, and proud.

This is the world we live in.
