The Snow That Stopped Time

A thick blanket of snow
covers the ground
it freezes the forest in time,
a wonderland only found in the winter

Prints of boots,
and paws
litter the ground in mayhem and disarray
they quickly melt away
the snow covers their tracks,
it conceals their identities
from the rest of the world

Snow balances on the trees
it sits up high on the tips of pines
a hat, on their pointy, evergreen heads
one nudge, could knock it all down
blizzards of snows would cascade off of the trees
you would be encaptured in a snowglobe-world

for just a second

then the snow falls,
it will keep falling,
until it hits the ground

The trails of walkers,
and skiers,
can no longer be seen
the ground is one dainty sheet of white

In the summer,
the forest is a jungle of vines and twirling trees,
through these obstacles
you can just barely see the roads from the trails
it is tangled,
overgrown,
sprinkled with sprouts of green
it is all so complex

In the winter,
everything slows down
time stops
the jungle of vines is concealed with snow
as if to form a fortress of white
I crawl through tunnels and holes, in the invasive vines master plan
to take over the forest
I burrow in huts
where the vines and snow meet to form a roof
that would protect me
I can see for miles
it’s easy
when the world seems to be crystallized
in millions of gentle snowflakes
everywhere I look
I see white,
and small hints of trees
who don’t want to be left out of the winter fun
it is all so simple

There seems to be a lack of gravity on snowflakes
they take their time
soaring through the sky
until they end their journeys
I watch as one intricate snowflake
ends its journey onto my tongue

It melts before I can really look at its designs
but I can imagine little ice fairies,
clustered together in an elaborate huddle

I only realize its beauty when it is gone

We only realize winter’s true beauty
when it is truly gone

What inspired me to write this poem was just thinking about nature's simplicity and beauty.
