StarDust
Maybe it wasn’t a shot that rang through the nation
But oh lord if it didn’t ring through my heart.
Maybe I thought I needed you to survive
Maybe I thought you needed me
(I guess you didn’t)
A Star
And
Dust floating through space
Gravity tells the dust it needs the star to be whole
But gravity fails to tell the star the same
And when the star explodes, the planet goes with it
And when the dust remains, it isn’t the same dust
So why didn’t I go with you?
Why am I not something new?
Why am I not at your table at three in the morning?
Playing cribbage and eating cereal
Me so careful to not mix the two, you not caring
Laughing
While my heart beats heavy
You an old curmudgeon, me a snotnosed kid
Even though you were only 12 to my 10, 15 to my 13, 18 to my 16
I loved you anyway
Because you didn’t mind the scars on my heart
The smell on my breath
The blood on my sleeves
You were never mad, you loved
Did you love me?
And I’m burning, burning, burning
Sometimes I wish I were ice cold
And sometimes I wish the flames would finally consume me
But instead they consume the star, because the Star is a flame
The dust sits by, in love, love, love
And if stars die, when stars die
They change to dust, but they do not decay
And neither will you
Because the worms will devour us all in the end
But I will remember you
And the stars will remember you
And a star is just dust, floating through space
And maybe your laugh did not ring through the hearts of the world
But as sure as the world it rang through mine
