The Princesses
The princesses glide into the classroom
And spread out their dresses as they sit in their desks
With their royal authority.
“Hi princess,”
They greet each other
Leaning in to compare their
Fairytale lives
With words so sweet that
I can’t help but wonder
If they taste cotton candy
Melting on their tongues
When they speak.
I, the jest,
Sitting, scoffing-
Laughing in my mind at their
Fake laugh, fake smiles,
But secretly wishing that
I could be a princess too-
Be a clone, like them-
Instead of a clown.
I wish that when I spoke,
People leaned in to listen,
Tasting the sweetness of
My words, my life
Like a storybook, princes
Flocking to try and woo me
But I’m not
A princess.
I’m just me.
But maybe,
Just maybe,
I’m the hidden hero
Of the fairytale.
