Downtown Parenting
I sit across the table from my son,
I want to hug him again
But one hug in, one hug out.
He tells me that his classmates laugh about him when he’s around,
Another stupid varrio kid.
He says his brother is skipping school and smoking,
I feel I have no right to stop him.
I claim I’m sorry,
But before I can speak the three words that need to be said
A turnkey says there’s an emergency in work detail.
As I get escorted away my son's eyes get misty and he kicks the chair.
There’s only seven days till next Saturday, hopefully I can sit across the table from my son again.
