Abner Doubleday
O’ Mr. Doubleday why,
Do they not believe,
You were the one,
Who invented America’s Pastime,
Baseball
How many people knew
You were quite smart
Quite rugged too
You fought in three wars
After you graduated in 1842
You went to West Point 25th in the class
You created
So many opportunities
For people
Unlike you
From baseball to cable car companies
How amazing
But how many people
Know this about you
It’s quite a disappointment
Nobody knows
A General in wars
From the Civil
To the Mexican Wars
Your name is etched
In a wall
In a place
That’s sacred to me
Seeing that they believe
The same that I do
In Cooperstown, New York
Where you invented baseball
And now is
The Baseball Hall of Fame
Doubleday field “Birthplace of Baseball” it says where they play
Remembering you
