The Girl Who Waits
Sitting on cold cement
Is a girl
People pass
Old and young
Everyone knows her
She is the girl who waits
She waits ‘till fall
With it’s brilliant colors
Each leaf painted a different shade
She waits ‘till winter
Each house lit with fires
Crackling and bright
She waits ‘till spring
When the snow has melted in shallow puddles
Reflecting the year’s bluest sky
She waits ‘till summer
A year has passed
The children have grown older
The adults have gained silver threads in their hair
But still
They pass and see
There on the steps
The girl
Who waits.
