Sunburn
Guilt,
it sinks into your skin like like an unwanted sunburn
after a long day at the beach.
It will fade
and you will forget about how painful it was…
but it will remain under your skin,
waiting for one word
to trigger the memory of that regretted moment...
and when you get another sunburn
on top of the original one,
it will be even more painful.
One sunburn may not hurt you,
but one sunburn makes a difference.
Guilt is like skin cancer…
Piling up
until there isn’t any more space on your skin.
You may not think it matters…
but guilt is like a sunburn.
And eventually,
you will have skin cancer.

This piece was originally inspired by my English teacher's story about being guilty for breaking his friend's arm. But when I starting writing a piece about my guilt on a specific event, My mind was blank. I started writing an extended metaphor about how guilt is a sunburn and then I just let it happen and completely fogot about the original prompt.
