Where She Lay
She weaves through the thick bush
Her destination unknown
Going where the trail tells her to go
She walks the trail slowly
Searching for danger
Trying to blend in with the long shadows
She pushes out into a clearing
But not before scanning it thoroughly
She pushes through the weeds up to her ankles
While gazing around for food and listening for danger
Then she lifts her head and spots A new shape
It looks like A bush from this distance
Then it moves like branches twisting around A trunk in the wind
Then all time freezes as she sees A light flicker in the bush
The light streaks across the field towards her
She starts to crouch wanting to spring away but gets trapped
Then the light impales her
The pain in her body felt like the stab of A thousand thorns
Then she jumps in shock
And runs into the forest trying to escape the painful light
At that time she knew it was over
The light lost its grip and fell off now she was gushing blood
She tried to push as far from the light as possible
But kept falling over
Leaving A trail as she goes
She picks her final place to rest
Hidden where she knew the light wouldn't find her
So it is there she lay
And it is there that she stayed

I wrote this poem in memory of A deer that I shot last archery season and could not find.
