Ramshackled
Behind her blue eyes and smile, the unshed tears and grief hide
Fear binds her lips, she's afraid if she says the wrong thing others will judge her
How can they know the hurt that her heart has endured? The pain of loss, internal damage that cannot be fixed
People never try and figure her out, only seeing the surface and assuming she’s fine, but little do they know…
She can barely put the pieces together herself
She has no clue who she is anymore
The life she thought was only black and white, one option or another, turned out to be more grey than she’d imagined.
So many things trying to hurt her, not enough people trying to save her.
Her heart has been given out one too many times, the jagged scars standing as proof
She needs help, but has no clue how to get it
So the pain stays buried, beneath her mask.
The mask of laughter and joy.
The mask of rehearsed emotions, and fake smiles

I wrote this piece to express my point of view on a common issue among my peers, and myself. We as a society fail to see the struggles that others face, and we are quick to judge. It's nearly impossible to determine how one is feeling or the challenges they face purely by how they look on the outside. I want young people to understand that judgung someone right off isn't always good. Sometimes there's more than meets the eye and we should be more aware of this.
