Cats & Barns
The soft hum of the tractor,
The fields full of cornstalks,
The smell of the cow filled barn,
All just part of being on the farm.
Solana and I,
crept along the edge of the old wooden barn
trying to be as still as we could.
I cautiously crept up the creaky wooden steps.
Meows and purrs,
I hear all around me.
But the creatures that made the sounds
remain well hidden.
Suddenly,
a high pitched “meow”
comes across my ears.
I creep over to the location of the sound.
6 little puffballs.
Each no bigger than an apple.
Waddle around my mud covered feet.
I scoop one up
and cradle her in my arms.
I stroke her soft white fur with the end of my finger.
Solana races over
and scoops up another.
She scoops up a little grey kitten
with bright blue eyes.
We sit on a pile of hay,
and listen to the sounds of the farm.
The hum of the tractor,
The banging of the cows against the barn walls,
The whistle of the cool summer breeze.
And for that moment,
all my worries were gone.
All fears went away.
All nerves vanished.
These little kittens
made me happy
when I thought
that nothing ever could.

I thought that this was a very important moment in my life, even though it seemed quite simple. I realized that even the little things can make us happy. I hope this poem will teach people to appreciate the little moments in life, even if they don't seem like much.
