"Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live." --Morrie

We all have that dark feeling inside
That everyone struggles to hide,

Where shadows lie,
And hope dies,

This empty dark feeling we can’t deny,
Of death, heartbreaks, and thoughts of nothingness,

Or feelings that torture us with pain,
That make us feel like we’re held back by a chain.

We scream for it to go away,
But most of the time it always stays.

We search for a way around,
But it seems like there isn’t one to be found.

Then we ask for a small hope to come,
To help destroy those shadows, or destroy at least some.

If it works, we don’t have to hide
At least some of the dark feeling inside.

We are thankful, if it slightly goes away,
Even though a little stays.

But when that doesn’t work,
And still the dark feeling lurks,

That’s when we all re-hide
Under a mask that helps push that feeling aside.

Even though it never goes away,
We still try to smile, laugh, have fun, and play.

But the thought of it always being there,
Makes us scared, so we sometimes think, “beware.”

We don’t even know where the pain is from,
But we then remember, when more of the dark feeling comes.

Everyone thinks that no one understands,
But this dark feeling is with everyone in the firsthand.

So this dark feeling inside
Is in everyone, even those who don’t seem to hide.

The author's comments:

What inspired me to write this poem was my own shadows in the darkness that lies within me. I wrote how I felt and what my thoughts were when I felt that way. I wrote this hoping that many teens who have a hard time expressing their feelings can read this and relate to it so they know there not alone.
