Where I'm From
I am from Sunday morning cooking’s
From suave boys and powerful lecturing
I am from a broken home
That became one in Gods stitching
I am from spelling tests
Gulley’s and fields
From stray dogs
And things unreal
I am from her
A woman too perfect for this world, a small woman
A smart woman
I am from a woman who loves
From him
A man with an enormous heart
Fighting desperately to be apart
Of a world that pushes him away
I am from the heat
Dirt and walking barefoot in the streets
From natural green grass
And a truly dysfunctional family
I am from two beating hearts
That would break into pieces
If they were ever apart
From family dinners infront the tv
And angry nights where it’d be hard to go to sleep
I am from the islands
Where music reflects the soul
Where bob Marley is a legend
And we’re known for our violence
I am from a home I don’t remember
From a place that isn’t me
I don’t know whether it’s a republic or a democracy
Or its traditions and currency
But it is still my home
In a sense
For I was made there, and it made me.
I am from the words I speak
From pain and brutality
I am from smiles and laughter
I am from a family
From Brooklyn
And the seven seas
That have influenced me
I know who I am
And not where I’ll be
But where I am from
Will always be a part of me

My english class was working on a personal history project, and I wrote this as sort of my personal history. I hope readers see just how both places I've called home has made an impact on who I am.
