Great Escape
Soaring high, miles above the ground,
No pain or misery to be found.
Joyous singing, playful words,
Nothing to hold back these cheerful birds.
Then darkness approaches,
The clouds grow thick,
The happiness was an illusion,
It was all a trick.
Heavy wings, broken heart,
Now it is the ending's start.
Falling fast, the chasm's pulling you down,
It won't be long before you drown.
Fly, fly, fly away,
Try to live another day.
Fast as you can, into the night,
Don't stop until you see the morning light.
I hope you make it,
For your sake and mine.
I hate to see you so broken,
Though you insist that you're fine.
Either you'll survive or you won't,
You can't change your fate.
Whether in freedom or in death,
Your legacy will be great.
Fly, my little bird.
Fly away and be free.
Escape this torment
And live for me.

This poem was inspired by my friend, who is battling depression. Having struggled with the same illness for many months myself, I wanted to do anything I could to help. She always enjoys reading my work, so I wrote several poems and short stories for her. Great Escape was one of them. My friend is currently receiving treatment for her depression and is on the road to recovery. This poem is dedicated to her and anyone else suffering from depression. I want you to know: you are not alone, and you can make it through this.
