A Shattered Heart

A heart shattered
Spreads painful shards
In all directions
Each one delivering a dose of
Emotional pain
That scars
And rips
And tears
And ruins peoples lives
Not only your own
But others
It hurts everyone around you
But there is no way to repair a heart
No way to duct tape it back together
Because you can’t forget
What you wish you didn’t remember
It holds on to you
And leeches off of you
Until you become tired of this
Emotional baggage
It just feels heavier and heavier
Until you can’t carry it anymore
Then you spread the weight to others
And the load becomes lighter
But with a price
You hurt your loved ones in the process
And you think that it’s okay
Because the same thing happened to you
When you were nine
And you were given the weight
For something that wasn’t
Your fault
It’s not my fault; it’s yours
I am the adult
I get to discipline you
For what you have done
Because this anvil keeps growing
And it’s grown so much that you spread it
To me

My father used to focus his outbursts on me for no apparent reason, so I would feel isolated yet targeted at the same time. I decided to write this poem to hopefully let it go, and forgive. And forget.
