Prayer of the Devastatingly Desperate
Death are you there?
If so, hear my prayer.
Watch over me please,
Make sure I don't slip too close to you.
Push me away if you have to,
Because I am not ready for you.
Not yet anyway-
Not while there are still debts to pay,
Still light in a day.
So please stay away.
It's not that I'm afraid,
If anything I'm too friendly.
So if you could please tenderly
Shove me away.

This poem is not only about the struggle of the person saying the prayer, but also about the character of Death itself. The person the prayer is coming from is struggling from the temptation of Death and the peace it offers. This person is losing faith in God and has turned to the only thing it knows is true, which is Death. Death is created as a diety, no longer grim, but merciful and kind, a theme which has been used by many authors, maybe one of the more prominent ones being Markus Zusak, whom I have reached to for the inspiration of this poem. Even though this poem has an overwhelming sense of desperation, what I really want the reader to get from it is the underlying sense of hope that is reflected in the diction and overall message.
