Have You Forgotten Me?
Have you forgotten me? Do you wish you have? Does the thought of me make you shudder? Do you sleep with the light on out of fear of me? Do you wake up screaming and sweating because you were dreaming of me? Does the sound of my name terrify you? Do you put on a brave face everyday and then come home and collapse because I haunt your mind and memories? Are you afraid of me? Do you tell yourself you aren’t? Do you look over your shoulder every few minutes to make sure I’m really gone? Does the memory of my laugh linger in your ears? Do you regret me? Do you deny knowing me? Are you trying to erase the pages of our story though you know you can’t? Do you ever wonder what could’ve been? Do you act like you’ve never cried, even though I’ve seen you do it? Does your heart skip a beat at the mere thought of me? Have you ever sincerely smiled since I left you? Do you remember happiness? Do you remember love? Do you remember me? Do you lose yourself in memories of me? Did I kill you? Or worse, did I let you live? Do you start to smile and then remember me? Is there a hollow emptiness in your heart because of me? Do you hate me? Worse, do you love me?
Yes. Look around, I’m still here. I’m right here.

I wrote this poem about a war veteran, the narrarator being war. I hope other people will see it in a different way and perhaps decide it means something else to them.
