The Free Hug Sign
The man waits patiently
In the busy market
People rushing this way and that
All at the same time
Just to fill their bags with a fruit or a vegetable
He waits
In the middle of it all
While the people blindly pass him
Their faces hiding in their shopping lists
Unaware he has something to offer
Standing where he is
From his point of view
He can see everything
Around him
He can see everyone
Around him
He waits, knowing that what he waits for
Will come with time
The people that come for food
Do not read his message
They see a foreign language
Written on cardboard
But to those that come to him
And see his sign
His message is clear
Here I am!

I wrote this about my friend Al who gives free hugs at the farmer's market every sunday.
