Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
Are we not a people?
Is our only string to life a male counterpart?
I am person;
I have beliefs and opinions,
I'm opinionated.
I have likes and dislikes,
I have feelings.
I have friends and enemies.
I have a life apart from my husband.
So why then when I'm invited to parties am I considered an accessory?
"It's formal"
"It's tradition"
They say.
Women wore corsets,
squeezing their torsos,
That was tradition
Mouth shut,
Eyes down
Seen but not heard,
That was tradition
It's not about the past, it's about the future. It's time to change.
It's our turn

This poem is about gender equality and how even though we have come a long way, we still have a long ways to go.
I wrote this poem at my school's Young Womens Conference. The moto for the conference was "it's our turn."
