There’s an empty chair,
Where grandma used to sit
As her lungs started to fail her
As our whole family told her to get up,
to move,
And she would try
But there was too much pain,
She couldn’t do it.
No one would believe her.
There’s an empty chair, a void, a space
that used to be filled with her presence.
Her laughter, her jokes, her teasing,
Her sadness.
There’s an empty chair,
where she would read the news,
Feed her dog,
And suffer in silence.
There’s an empty chair.
