The C-Word
My heart was a hummingbird
As you stood before me
The rain drizzled down your cheeks
It was the second time I’d ever seen you
Allow the clouds to open up
Once, when your father died
And now, when everything else died
How do you
What do you
Say Anything
Do Anything
When you watch those blue eyes turn to water
We never said the word
That we were all thinking
Never thought it, never breathed it
It stayed between the edges of our teeth
Poking and prodding
But finally, my lips slipped
The word tumbled out
Gracefully, painfully
It lay on the ground before us
Writhing in the wetness of tears
I hugged you
But I still do not believe
I’m ignoring that word that I said
Not paying mind
As it cruelly slaps our tongues
Because I believe in you, Dad
I believe that you
Even with eyes releasing rivers
Can overcome anything
Will conquer everything
Even if it is
Cancer.
