Life is the first breath of a baby as it starts a new journey of existence
And the giggles, coos, and tears of a newborn tiring and persistent
Life is the first steps of a toddler, gaining freedom everyday
And the eye that is kept on an adventurous child as they begin to stray
Life is the first day of school, when you are nervous to meet new friends
And the number of play dates with classmates that never ever ends
Life is the freedom of a rider when the training wheels on a bike are removed
And the scraped knees and bruises leading you to improve
Life is the first day of middle school, as the big kid days approach
And the basketball games, your team dominates, encouraged by your coach
Life is your first love in high school and your first broken heart
And the new school you transferred to, hoping for a fresh start
Life is ACT prep and another sleepless night
And the countless hours of studying to get every answer right
Life is graduation—after that, the real work will begin
And an acceptance to a dream college that you read with a grin
Life is another relationship where you adore your partner
And the moment you two fall in love, pushing the relationship farther
Life is your marriage proposal at an extra fancy dinner
And a bride and groom crazy for each other because they know they found a winner
Life is your first real job, 9-5 in a cubicle of a boring gray office
(And the moment you start to grow up and become a little more cautious)
Life is the moment you’re pregnant and the bump begins to form
And the day you give birth, causing life to transform
Life is another anniversary, accompanied with a kiss
And the strong love you still share, filled with long lasting bliss
Life is growing old together and putting up with your spouse
And moving into a retirement home, out of your brownstone house
Life is your body breaking down, as you grow old with age
And the life that leaves your body, escaping from this cage
Life is another funeral of a lifelong friend
And life is when you realize at some point it has to end

The author's comments:

Life in general inspired me to write this piece. I wanted to capture key moments many of us experience in our lifetimes. I also wanted the poem to convey the life of a person, starting when they were born.

&quot;Writing eases my suffering. It&#039;s my soul&#039;s medicine. I write when I hurt. I write what I fear. Writing is my form of personal freedom. I write to save myself. I write to survive as an individual.&quot;<br /> ~Amor Magner
