Birthday Candles
When they’re lit up,
they’re hopeful
they’re smiles and memories and that extra scoop of ice cream after a beach day
they’re orange sunrises painting the sky at dawn,
and the first snow of the winter.
You make a wish and blow them out
and the ice cream has melted,
and sun is setting, full of purples and blues,
when the snow turns black from debris
You light them every year,
carefully placed in the frosting,
dripping with wax and lacking the luster they had in previous years;
for now you know,
the candles will never be lit for long.
