Yellow Fish
I am a cruel person
for I have let your yellow fish die.
His thin fins delicately stroked the water.
His dark orange belly bobbed on the surface.
His small eyes were looking upwards.
I’m the one to blame.
I forgot to feed him those tiny food flakes
I forgot to clean his tank, it turned deep green, covered in algae.
I left the door open and your cat came in
glaring at him
licking her lips
She leaped from a chair and attacked the bowl.
Your poor fish was swallowed whole.
Then the cat’s stomach bulged, she threw up your fish and
I quickly put it back in the bowl
Ma’am, I’m truly sorry for your loss----
but your cat’s fine.

I was inspired to write this piece in remembering my first pet, a fish I named Rainbow.
